The story behind Plaça del Diamant
Few squares in Barcelona carry as much literary weight as this one. Mercè Rodoreda set her novel La Plaça del Diamant here, a book translated into more than forty languages and made into a film in 1980, and it's part of why the square draws visitors from well outside Gràcia. A bronze figure of Natàlia, the novel's protagonist, better known as "la Colometa," has watched over the square since 1984.
The name predates the novel by more than a century. When the land was subdivided in 1860, its owner, town councilor and jeweler Josep Rossell Imbert, named the new streets and squares after gems and precious materials, saving the most valuable, diamond, for this one.
There's another layer to the square most visitors never see: a Civil War-era air-raid shelter, 12 meters below street level, rediscovered during construction work in 1992. It's one of the largest and best-preserved of the roughly 1,300 shelters built across Barcelona during the war, holding up to 200 people. The Taller d'Història de Gràcia still leads tours down into it today.
