Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia: real history
Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia is one of the neighborhood's most emblematic squares, home to the Torre del Rellotge, Gràcia's iconic clock tower, built between 1862 and 1864 by architect Antoni Rovira i Trias, back when Gràcia was still its own independent town, before its annexation into Barcelona in 1897. At 33 meters, it's the tallest civil tower in the district, and its bell became a real symbol of the neighborhood during the Revolt of the Quintas in 1870, an uprising against mandatory military service.
The square is also home to Gràcia's district offices and the Citizen Service Office (Oficina d'Atenció Ciutadana), and sits right next to Carrer Gran de Gràcia, the neighborhood's main street.
