A square that's changed its name more than once
Plaça de la Revolució has gone by several names over the last two centuries, each one tracking the politics of the moment.
It started out as Plaça de Santa Isabel around 1845, then took the name of Queen Isabel II herself. When the Revolution of 1868, La Gloriosa, drove her from the throne, the square was renamed in its honor, a name it first carried in 1871. Franco's dictatorship replaced it again with Plaça de la Unificación, and it wasn't until 1983 that Plaça de la Revolució became permanent for good.
Locals have long called it Plaça del Mercat too, since it sits just steps from Mercat de l'Abaceria on Travessera de Gràcia, and its main axis lines up directly with Carrer Verdi, one of this part of Gràcia's principal streets. Today it's one of the liveliest corners of the neighborhood: bars, restaurants, one of the city's better ice cream shops, and a hopscotch mosaic laid down in 1997 that traces scenes from Gràcia's Festa Major.
There's history underfoot too: a 1995 remodel uncovered a Civil War-era air-raid shelter 12 meters down, built with its own electricity, running water, and even an infirmary, one of the more advanced shelters of its kind. Guided visits, run by the Taller d'Història de Gràcia, reopened to the public in 2023.
