New Mercat de l'Abaceria in Gràcia: Reopening 17 November 2026

The main hall is for fresh food: butchers, fishmongers, poultry, fruit and vegetables, eggs, legumes and more, with non-food stalls outside. On floor -1, the Consum supermarket opens in the third week of November, as confirmed by both the cooperative and the market, and the basement also holds a car park and storage rooms for neighborhood associations. Work around the building is almost finished, and the stalls are now being fitted out. There's one condition: the stallholders will only move if they can all move at once. The decision comes after a site visit on Thursday 5 November; if it isn't ready, they'll spend Christmas in the Passeig de Sant Joan tent and move in early 2027.

To say goodbye to the tent, the stallholders are throwing a party on Sunday 25 October, with activities in the morning and a community lunch in front of the Clavé monument on Passeig de Sant Joan.

What's changing for the neighborhood

For eight years, foot traffic in this part of Gràcia has leaned east toward Passeig de Sant Joan and west toward the Mercat de la Llibertat. With the market back on Travessera de Gràcia, that's expected to shift back to the central Vila de Gràcia, bringing more people through Carrer de Torrijos, Carrer del Planeta, and Plaça del Sol on their way to and from market shopping.

The market also sits among some of Gràcia's best-known squares. Plaça de la Revolució is just around the corner, and Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia and Plaça del Diamant are a few minutes' walk away, so a market trip is easy to combine with a walk through the neighborhood.

Shopping for a celebration? Pick up a birthday cake on market day

If you're buying for a birthday dinner at the market, the cake can come from just around the corner. Our American-style birthday cakes come in vanilla, chocolate, carrot or red velvet, in sizes from a small 14 cm cake for 4 to a 20 x 30 cm sheet cake for 24, from 18€, plus cupcakes by the dozen. Order online at least 48 hours ahead and collect it at Plaça del Sol on your way back from the Abaceria, or have it delivered by cargo-bike courier.

In season: from 20 to 31 October we bake panellets for La Castanyada, and pumpkin, apple and pecan pies are available to order until the end of December. For Thanksgiving on Thursday 26 November, order by Tuesday 24 November.

When does the Mercat de l'Abaceria reopen? The planned date is Tuesday 17 November 2026. What was there before the renovation? The original market opened in 1892 and operated on the same site for over a century before closing for renovation in 2018. Vendors have been operating from a temporary structure on Passeig de Sant Joan since then.

Is there parking at the new market? The basement will have a car park, but no opening date has been confirmed yet. Until then, the nearest paid car park we know of is Parking Saba Bamsa, right in front of our bakery on Plaça del Sol.
